The Criminalization of Prohormones and Steroids While Tobacco and Alcohol remain Legal
As you read this article, there are those in congress that feel it is their patriotic duty to instruct you in how to live your life!
Here we are in the twenty-first century with Neo Puritan members of congress doing their dandiest to outlaw, and therefore restrict your right to build muscle in the gym at an unusual rate. Many of those members that are on the extreme right of the prohormone/steroid use controversy feel that if an otherwise hard working, tax paying, family raising, law abiding individual is found to be ingesting, or in possession of prohormones or steroids, in order to build better quality muscle at an advanced rate, that this person SHOULD GO TO JAIL! Can you believe this? Recreational users of prohormones that are not even competing on a professional sports team, (so there is no notion of cheating here) should be put in jail along side violent criminals? Thieves? Robbers? RAPISTS? All because they, as ADULTS, choose to use a substance to enhance high quality muscle growth.
Let us now examine step by step, some of the more prevalent arguments commonly used by members of Congress, the Senate, the DEA, and others that are so adamantly against an adult male or female making their own informed decisions as to whether they choose to use prohormones or steroids.
1) STEROIDS KILL!
This is the scariest scare tactic and perhaps the most ridiculously false argument used when arguing against an of age adult's right to choose whether or not to use prohormones/steroids. Just look at the famous start football player, Lyle Alzado!
Sadly, in 1992, Lyle Alzado died a painful death from Brain Cancer. Lyle Alzado, who had a distinguished career with The Denver Broncos, the LA Raiders, and the Cleveland Browns, was in the eyes of many, a GREAT football player.
However, Lyle Alzado was NOT a doctor in any séance of the word. I mention this fact because the idea of Lyle Alzado dying from steroids came from none other that Lyle Alzado himself. No doctor ever confirmed Lyle Alzado’s suspicion that twenty-plus years of hard core, virtually non stop steroid use resulted in the brain cancer that he was actually diagnosed with having, and dieing from. Is it POSSIBLE that Lyle Alzado's virtually constant use of anabolic androgenic steroids caused cancer? Of course it's possible. Although I have yet to read any conclusive proof in any report or documented study to support this notion, it is still possible that twenty straight years of abusing steroids, or any drug for that matter could cause brain cancer, I mean, the human body can only take so much abuse!
Abuse you say? Yes, abuse. Using steroids or prohormones WILL put a strain on your body because anytime you continuously introduce a foreign substance to the body, or additional amount of a naturally occurring bodily hormone such as testosterone, in larger quantities than was originally intended by nature, you will put a strain on your body. This is why many of today's more knowledgeable athletes and recreational users of anabolic, androgenic, steroids and prohormones CYCLE their use in order to give the body quality rest and recuperative time to regain the body’s natural homeostatic condition. One should never use prohormones or steroids for an uninterrupted or sustained period of time without having knowledge of how to CYCLE. But back to the question at hand. Lyle Alzado's death, without question was sad and unfortunate. That his constant use of steroids without taking a break that amounted to anything useful was irresponsible and also unfortunate. Whether or not his brain cancer was actually cause by his twenty plus years of steroid abuse will never be known.
The few things that are known to be FACT in the case of Lyle Alzado's death are as follows:
A) Lyle Alzado's doctors when asked by reporters if his death or brain cancer was indeed cause by steroid abuse, doctors would NOT confirm this notion because they had absolutely no proof of this notion whatsoever.
B) Lyle Alzado was a famous professional football player, but he NOT a research scientist in any sense of the word, or otherwise medically qualified to make such a diagnosis.
C) To the best knowledge of this author, there is to date NO qualified medical evidence that anyone has died from the unperscribed use of prohormones or anabolic androgenic steroids.
STEROIDS WILL SHRINK YOUR TESTICALS!
Shrinkage of the testicals, otherwise known as testicular atrophy. What immediate side effect could possibly be more frightening to a man, young or old that the prospect of having your testicals shrunk? Ha, this is a good I must admit. The truth of this notion is two fold.
1) The testicals will in some cases shrink in size while using steroids and even with some prohormones.
2) Testicular shrinkage in limited to the time you are actually using the particular hormone.
STEROIDS CAUSE BALDNESS!
My goodness, first my testicals shrink, and I'll go bald too? Is there any truth to this? Again, as in testicular shrinkage, the answer is two fold. Unfortunately, unlike temporary testicular shrinkage, baldness accelerated by steroid use is not self reversible. However,
1) Hair loss resulting from steroid and/or prohormone use occurs mainly in those who are already pre disposed to male pattern baldness. In other words, those who are already going to loose their hair due to genetic male pattern baldness can experience an acceleration of this process when using certain prohormones or steroids. In general, the more androgenic a particular steroid or prohormone, the more likely it can help speed up balding in a genetically pre disposed individual.
2) There are certain FDA approved drugs such as Dudasteride and Finasteride that can be used to reduce the conversion
of testosterone into DHT, the main culprit of male pattern baldness. These drugs are approved to slow or in some cases
stop male pattern baldness from propagating itself. Although the FDA does not approve these drugs for use by body builders
and recreational users to help prevent or lower the conversion rate of Testosterone in DHT, the drugs in any case are known by the aforementioned to be of great aid and specificity in combating to acceleration of male pattern baldness in prohormone and steroid users.
Steroids will give you MAN BOOBS!
This can actually occur if you are using highly aromatizing steroids such as testosterone, which converts into estrogen in the body leading to an imbalance in the body’s natural testosterone/estrogen ratio. Again, the body constantly strives to maintain homeostasis, which is the body’s preferred balance of hormones and other chemicals and nutrients. When the body senses that there is too much testosterone in comparison with estrogen, it converts this extra testosterone into estrogen until the body’s desired balance is reached. However, when the body has “too much” estrogen…remember, estrogen is in great part what makes woman appear soft, and supple compared with their male counterparts who are filled with more testosterone, which tends to make men more muscular, and hairy, and aggressive, and sex seeking than most women. Estrogen is in part responsible for female sex characteristic development. It is important to note that not all males who use testosterone will be affected negatively. (Develop gynomastia)
Before using such strong androgens as testosterone, it is important to understand the early signs of gynomastia development, such as tender nipples, or milky discharge.
Likewise, it is imperative to a safe cycle that the steroid user have a Selective, estrogen, modulator, receptor Most common forms: Tamoxifen (Nolvadex), Clomiphene (Clomid) ON HAND to combat gynomastia if it should read its unsightly head. Once you notice the early warning signs of gynomastia, this is NOT the time to try and find products such as Nolvadex, as it may take weeks to procure without seeing a doctor! This is why users of testosterone products often have Nolvadex on hand before they start their cycle. A superior way of preventing the onset of steroid use gynomastia is to incorporate the use of an AI, Aromatise Inhibitor. These drugs work by inhibiting the aromatization of estrogen. This means that in effect AI’s prevent androgens from converting to estrogen, again, making it difficult (but not impossible) for estrogen to reach receptor sites.

How many tens of thousands die from ciggaretts each year? Take a quick look at these statistics and tell me how Congress can justify ciggaretts and alchohol, (great generators of taxes btw) are legal, but users of anabolic steriods, that have exactly ZERO records of causing pre mature death, should be treated as criminals?
• The combination of smoking and alcohol consumption causes most laryngeal cancer cases. In 2003, an estimated 3800 deaths occurred from laryngeal cancer.
• In 2003, an estimated 57,400 new cases of bladder cancer were diagnosed and an estimated 12,500 died from the disease.
• For smoking-attributable cancers, the risk generally increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and the number of years of smoking, and generally decreases after quitting completely.
• Smoking cigarettes that have a lower yield of tar does not substantially reduce the risk for lung cancer.
• Cigarette smoking increases the risk of developing mouth cancers. This risk also increases among people who smoke pipes and cigars.
• Reductions in the number of people who smoke cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and other tobacco products or use smokeless tobacco could prevent most of the estimated 30,200 new cases and 7,800 deaths from oral cavity and pharynx cancers annually in the United States.

• The 2004 Surgeon General's report newly identifies other cancers caused by smoking, including cancers of the stomach, cervix, kidney, and pancreas and acute myeloid leukemia.
• In 2003, an estimated 22,400 new cases of stomach cancer were diagnosed, and an estimated 12,100 deaths were expected to occur.
• Former smokers have lower rates of stomach cancer than those who continue to smoke.
• For women, the risk of cervical cancer increases with the duration of smoking.
• In 2003, an estimated 31,900 new cases of kidney cancer were diagnosed, and an estimated 11,900 people died from the disease.
• In 2003, an estimated 30,700 new cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed, attributing to 30,000 deaths. The median time from diagnosis to death from pancreatic cancer is about 3 months.

The federal government continued their steroid witch-hunt targeting the dietary supplement industry with a raid of Bodybuilding.com on Thursday, September 24, 2009. The criminal investigation accuses Bodybuilding.com and its corporate officers of illegal marketing and distributing several anabolic steroids, unapproved new and misbranded drugs labeled fraudulently as dietary supplements, specifically “Madol”, “Tren”, “Superdrol”, “Androstenedione”, and “Turinabol”.
Only androstenedione and Turinabol are legally classified as anabolic steroids; these ingredients were not disclosed on the product labels. The FDA has asserted that Madol, Tren and Superdrol are also anabolic steroids. However, only the DEA has the authority to administratively add these substances to the Controlled Substances list. The DEA has NOT yet made this determination. These ingredients have been widely and openly sold as listed ingredients in dietary supplements for years.
